Christianity is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion that diverged from Judaism in the first century of the common era. Christian beliefs center on the life, teachings, execution and resurrection of Jesus. Christianity is widely practiced globally, and is the world’s largest religion with just under two and a half billion followers. As a result, there are a wide variety of denominations and Christian practice and teaching can vary considerably.

For Christians, the cross represents Godβs love for humanity and creation expressed in Jesusβ death and resurrection. The cross looks back to Jesusβ crucifixion in the first century C.E., but has also come to signify Christian identity, self-sacrifice and the victory of life over death.
Yale’s Christian community is served by the Rev. Ian Oliver, Senior Associate Chaplain for Protestant Life & Pastor of the University Church in Yale, and Rev. Jenny Peek, Associate University Chaplain & Associate Pastor of the University Church in Yale. It is also served by a wide variety of Christian groups on and around campus: learn more about them and when they meet below.
