Shintoism

Shintoism or Shinto is a Taoic religion from Japan, with roots stretching back around two thousand years.  It is a polytheist, animistic religion that centers on spirits known as kami. Shintoism is a religion without a central written holy book or spiritual leader, and so contains a variety of branches, differing between regions and sometimes being practiced syncretically with other faiths.  While a major religious group in Japan, it is a more minor faith elsewhere, and has approximately four million adherents worldwide.
