My first time getting exposed to the Whoniverse was during graduate school. Despite being a long time David Tennant fan, I had not felt inclined to this series about a time and space traveling makeshift doctor. First watching the show with new classmates who were longtime fans, however, became a wonderful bonding experience. And endless opportunities for life reflection!
One of my favorite lines, from a character we meet in passing that now sits framed in my office:
“The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define as much as happiness or love; whether it’s the world, or a relationship. Everything has its time, and everything ends.”
Sarah Jane Smith (Doctor Who, “School Reunion,” wr. Toby Whithouse, 2006).
I recall my eyes welling with tears hearing this for the first time. What a gift that someone should be so engaged in self and situational awareness, for all the incredible love and loss they feel, not seek to hold on but rather help facilitate the necessary change and transition with love.
As we inch closer to graduation season there will be many transitions that we may carry big feelings about. How can we honor those that have defined our time together in acknowledgement and gratitude?
