There’s a temptation to think that we need to achieve mastery in every aspect of life. I was taught “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” But I’m discovering that “good enough” is often just that – good enough. I like to bake, and sometimes I have fantasies of putting in Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hours until I’m international “Master Baker.” But, really, all I want to do is make good, sweet things for my students, nothing more. And, as they say “that’s OK.” As I talk to new students about the panoply of classes and activities at Yale, I’m more and more convinced that it is very important to have some things in your life that are just fun, that you don’t have to master, and that can distract you from your more serious quests. Look for things that you may never be master of, but that bring light and laughter to your days.
