Life Before Yale Chaplaincy:

  • Senior Pastor of Mount Aery Baptist Church in Bridgeport, CT (1975-1992)

Key Contributions:

  • Oversaw Chaplain’s office’s move to Bingham, its current location.
  • Dedicated the first Musalla (Muslim prayer room) at Yale in 2001 and hired the first Muslim Fellow to serve the Muslim student community in 2005.
  • Organized, and later published, a preaching series celebrating Yale’s tercentennial in 2001 at Battell Chapel.

  • First Baptist to hold the role of University Chaplain
  • Founding faculty member of Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma

Life After Yale Chaplaincy:

  • Carl and Dorothy Bennett Professor in Pastoral Counseling, Yeshiva University
  • Fulbright Scholar at University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2008, returning as Fulbright Specialist in 2010.
  • Pastor of Dixwell Avenue United Church of Christ in New Haven from 2011 - 2023
