Makara Sankranthi (Hinduism)

Tue Jan 13, 2026 12:00 a.m.—11:59 p.m.

Makara Sankranti celebrates Surya, the Hindu Sun god. The festival date is based on astronomical calculations and marks when the sun begins its northerly migration from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. Makara Sankranti marks the end of night-time for the gods and for humans, a transition to a more auspicious time, out of darkness (long nights) into light (longer days).
