In many Christian churches, this past weekend, the reading from the Gospel of John focused on the disciples of Jesus hiding in a room together. They were, reasonably, scared for their lives as their leader had just been killed. Together, they found solace and had a moment of peace when Jesus appeared in their midst. Sacred, safe communities are important. Places we can be together and share hopes, fears, and expectations help us to stay in touch with the sacred in our midst. For most of the past year, my sacred, safe communities have met online or over the phone. Over the past few months, I’ve had several conversations with students and alumni, who didn't feel safe. They, like the disciples, were fearful for themselves or for others in their communities who felt threatened due to their race, sexual orientation, health, or other situations of violence. I wonder how we each might reach out to help create more sacred, safe spaces on campus and in our world...
